Chapter Thirty-Two

AFTER THE FBI HOSTAGE Rescue Team declared the scene secure, I was taken to an ambulance and rushed to a local hospital with an armed escort.

It was just after two A.M. and I discovered that I was in Dallas. The agents that accompanied me in the ambulance wouldn’t say much, but they did confirm that Popov had escaped and none of the half dozen men working for him had survived the shootout.

Upon arrival at the emergency room, FBI Special Agent Calvin King introduced himself and said he would chat with me later. The nurses shooed him away and gave me IV fluids and pain medicine that made life a lot better. They exchanged the jumpsuit the HRT guys had given me for a hospital gown and took me into an exam room.

The lost fingernail was the worst of my injuries. I was dehydrated and had lost a few pounds, but otherwise I was going to be fine. The doctor told me I just needed a day or two of rest and observation and he would send me home – or wherever the feds had in mind.

Once the doctors were satisfied that I was stable and my injuries were treated, I was moved to a room. I slept all day, waking up sometime in the night to find Jenny sleeping on the couch next to me.

“Jenny,” I said softly. I groaned as I tried to sit up in the bed. I fished for the bed remote to try to help me sit up but was unsuccessful.

“Troy!” Jenny said excitedly as she kicked off the blanket and jumped up from the couch to see about me. She found the remote and slowly raised the head of the bed to help me sit up.

“How are you?” she asked frantically.

“I’ll live,” I said, wincing in pain as the soreness and aches hit me. “How’s Marcus?”

She stroked my hair as she leaned against the bed. “He’s going to be okay, thanks to you.”

I suddenly remembered the e-mail I had sent her before going to San Antonio. Jenny was acting as if she had never received it. Had I even sent it? Was it all just a dream?

“They shot him in the leg,” I said.

“The doctors said there should be no permanent damage,” Jenny answered. “He’s going to be okay. Don’t worry about him. Just focus on getting better.”

“I am sorry,” I said. “For everything.”

“We can talk about everything later,” she said. “Just get some rest.”

“I should have listened to you,” I said.

“You did what you thought was best,” she said, leaning down to kiss my forehead. “I admire that about you.”

After she kissed me, she leaned in close and whispered, “I love you too, Alex Shepherd.”

“You read the e-mail?” I asked, looking up at her with a look of surprise.

Jenny nodded.

“You’re not mad?”

“Why would I be mad?” Jenny asked. “Your story broke my heart. You’ve been through so much. How could I be mad at someone who lost everything?”

Her eyes watered. “I am so sorry for what has happened to you.
